Indiana CPAs who want to learn about hot topics, financial news, best practices, and other pressing issues affecting the accounting profession have a new tool at their disposal.
On February 27, theIndiana CPA Society (INCPAS) announced it launched a new blog titled "I was just thinkin'." The goal of the blog is to provide an engaging and collaborative platform that encourages readers to join in a discussion on timely issues and news.
"The Indiana CPA Society is excited to have joined the blogosphere! Blogging is another way for us to connect with our members and those interested in the accounting profession", said Gary Bolinger, CAE, president and CEO of INCPAS. "It's also a great way for our members and staff to be able to share their views and expertise on news, hot topics, and relevant issues."
Contributing writers for the blog will include INCPAS senior staff. CPAs who are members of the society may be added to the list of bloggers in the future.
Here are samples of recent posts:
"In the beginning" – Bolinger reflects on the history of the CPA profession and its rise to the level of prominence in business, even before CPAs were required to be certified. Building on the past and moving to the future, he discusses how the new CGMA credential may help shape the future of the profession.
"You HAD Mail" – After reading an article about the impending demise of the United States Postal Service (USPS), Bolinger wonders how other companies and industries might be affected by the shutdown. He talks about missed opportunities by the USPS and how this could relate to integrated reporting in the CPA profession.
Stacy Jarret, CPA, said she's found the first blog postings entertaining and enlightening, and she views the blog as a resource to help her think of ways to improve the profession and her professional success.
"As an INCPAS member, I think the new blog is a great way to communicate with the members, especially those who might not be as active and aware of the issues facing our profession", said Jarrett. "The most recent blog posting addressed how our profession is destined to change and that we need to constantly redefine the service we provide to society. I think it's exciting to think about this and how I want to take an active role in the constant change."
And although the blog is just a bit of a "baby blog" right now, INCPAS envisions it will continue to evolve over time, encompassing the latest news items and hot topics in the profession.
Future topics planned for upcoming blog posts include: the definition of a private company; the society's development of a knowledge management system, i.e., what is knowledge, how it is different (if at all) from data or information, and if it can or should be managed; and state legislative efforts that impact the CPA profession both in Indiana and around the country.
Currently, more than 7,000 CPAs in public practice, industry, government, and education are members of INCPAS.
