While the Department of Justice waits to deliver its final decision to Microsoft regarding the software giant's fate as one or more companies, the company has unveiled its .NET strategy, a new effort at delivering services through a bundled approach to doing business.
A general manager for one of the districts says that the company's number one priority for the .NET strategy is ensuring the privacy of all users is kept strictly confidential. The company is moving to a much more solutions-oriented approach with value-added services from Microsoft.
The .NET strategy has several components:
- creating an integrated way to incorporate tools like speech recognition, voice to text and changing from application-focused to user task focused;
- creating a new programming model that banks on the popular XML standard;
- offering users a 'passport' that will be honored at more than 600 Web sites by the end of the year - the passport is an electronic wallet that enables users not to key in billing information time and time again; and
- finding a way to develop and deliver content no matter what device is used; previously, technicians who write code had to write separate code for your PC, cell phone, PDA, etc.
The Microsoft manager says there are three areas Microsoft is focusing on with our .NET strategy: scalability, the XML standard and software as a service. The last concept is the ability to deliver software and other functions as you need it--like an ASP situation--rather than buying a packaged box on the store shelf.
