Each year during tax season, the IRS releases a list of the top 12 tax scams that taxpayers can encounter at any time during the year. However, these schemes – such as identity theft, phone scams, and tax return preparer fraud – usually peak around the time people get ready to file their taxes.
Thwarting tax-related identity theft continues to be a problem for the IRS and the tax industry, and identity theft was ranked No. 1 in the “Dirty Dozen” list of scams for 2016. Identity theft has been in the top spot each year since 2012.
But the IRS said it is making significant strides to address identity theft and tax refund fraud.
