IRS's Digital Daily Bids Farewell

To taxpayers and tax practitioners everywhere:

On January 6, 1996, despite a blizzard and a government furlough, the IRS Digital Daily debuted -- on schedule and well within budget. This grass roots effort was the IRS' first Internet presence and developed by a staff of four. We worked hard with one goal in mind: making it easier for people to get the tax information they need. The "hip", retro style of the site was definitely out of the ordinary, and so was your response. IRS definitely was not accustomed to getting "fan mail!" That debut was five years and hundreds of awards ago.

Today we bid a fond farewell to the Digital Daily. On February 1, 2001, responsibility for the IRS Internet presence transferred to Electronic Tax Administration from Multimedia Publishing Division. Electronic Tax Administration has announced that shortly after the transfer, a new IRS web presence will replace the Digital Daily.

The staff of the Digital Daily would like to take this opportunity to thank the many, many customers and friends who, over the past five years, helped build and grow this web site. We owe special thanks to the American Library Association, the American Bar Association Section of Taxation, the Commissioner's Advisory Group, and numerous small business owners and individuals who offered suggestions and help over the years.

And what's next for the Digital Daily staff? We're off to new adventures and challenges. Some of us will be working to make government services more accessible to the 8 million Americans and 168,000 Federal workers with disabilities. Others have chosen to work in knowledge management, continuing to build the information base that has been the lifeblood for IRS print, CD-ROM, TaxFax, and Internet services for years. We are all, however, saying a very difficult goodbye.

We've become more like family than co-workers. It's been fast and it's been fun. Above all, it has been the best five years of our careers.

Thank you for allowing us to serve you.
