McLean, Virginia â February 16, 2000 - Deltek Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: DLTK). Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP (SOM) recently chose Deltek's Advantage product as its financial management system.
Two years ago, this prestigious firm decided not to invest resources into its proprietary financial system to make it Y2K compliant. Joseph Dailey, CFO, took charge of evaluating alternatives to SOM's existing financial system. According to Dailey, "Our goal in changing our financial systems went well beyond the Y2K issue. We wanted to ensure that any investment we made in our systems would result in improved functionality to the Accounting and Project Management staff as well as improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the firm's financial administration. Advantage from Deltek was the logical choice for us, since Deltek is the leading financial management system vendor for A&E firms."
SOM recently went live with Advantage in its Chicago, New York and San Francisco offices, as well its affiliated London office in the UK. "Until now, each office ran separately, with its own databases, payroll, and HR systems," said Dan MacIsaac, Manager of Financial Systems. "Billing was very labor intensive. Our goal was to spend less time on the accounting close, and spend more time analyzing our results and developing recommendations to optimize our financial performance."
SOM has been through seven billing cycles with the new system, and the benefits are already clear: faster closing and better, more consistent reporting.
MacIsaac points out that "The conversion wasn't only a technical issue, it was also a cultural issue. When people are accustomed to one system, they have a hard time giving up the way they've been doing things. That's why it's so important to pick the right solution, one that allows flexibility for each user, but at the same time maintains consistent firm-wide standards. On a typical day at SOM, up to 100 users are on line with Advantage."
According to Ken Brown, President, "SOM is intent on setting the bar higher in every aspect of our practice, from excellence in design, to efficiency and quality in the work processes that lead to those designs. We believe that the Advantage system goes a long way in supporting this vision."
