The Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants' (VSCPA) award-winning Financial Fitness Calendar is now available for the 2009 calendar year. Developed in partnership with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the 12-month wall calendar is a free consumer resource as part of the VSCPA's financial literacy initiative to improve the financial health of Virginians. Called Financial Fitness, the campaign is part of a national effort of the CPA profession to reach out to the community and educate the public — from school children to retirees — on topics related to money management and fiscal responsibility.

"In light of the current economic crisis, it's important for consumers to be reminded of basic money management principles," said Gregory F. Lawson, CPA, chair of the VSCPA Board of Directors. "The VSCPA is honored to provide this free calendar and other valuable resources to help Virginians keep their finances healthy. The CPA profession has a long tradition of helping individuals and businesses realize their financial goals. The VSCPA and its members take this responsibility very seriously and we're here to help."

In addition to serving as a wall calendar, the VSCPA Financial Fitness Calendar is also a financial literacy resource guide. The calendar is filled with year-round money management advice on topics like budget planning, saving for the future, understanding credit, and wise investments as well as important tax and financial dates to remember, definitions of common financial terms, and contact information for additional financial assistance.

The calendar also features four Virginia CPAs with diverse careers, including Christine Baughman, CPA, of Washington, D.C., auditor at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; Gregory F. Lawson, CPA, of Newport News, senior partner at Goodman & Company; Karen Joyner, CPA, of Norfolk, chief financial officer at the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia; and Sam Hicks, Ph.D. of Lorton, associate professor of accounting at Virginia Tech, Pamplin College of Business.

Consumers can access the 2009 Financial Fitness Calendar free of charge online or request a printed copy by e-mailing the VSCPA or calling (800)733-8272.

Other facets of the VSCPA's award-winning Financial Fitness initiative include managing a consumer Web site to serve as a clearinghouse of financial resources. The site includes free financial planning articles, a downloadable template for a personal spending plan, online sign-up for a free Financial Fitness e-newsletter, financial check-up quiz, and more. The site also provides pro bono assistance and online guides for nonprofit organizations. The nonprofit guides contain information about important tax issues, liability and responsibility of Board members, a budgeting guide, and a toolkit for nonprofit auditing committees.
