The New York City accounting firm of Berdon LLP has announced its membership in the international alliance of accounting firms known as TIAG® (The International Accounting Group). With this strategic move, Berdon LLP joins an alliance of more than 110 independent accounting firms from around the world and gains unparalleled access to TIAG's sister alliance of independent law firms, TAGLaw®. 

TIAG recently engaged top industry consultant Allan D. Koltin, CEO of Koltin Consulting Group, to help expand its North American membership with a number of Top 100 US firms. TIAG is now in discussions with several of these firms, and Berdon's membership marks a significant milestone in this expansion project. 

Representatives from Berdon LLP will attend the upcoming TAG Alliances International Conference in Munich, Germany, October 21-24. At the conference, Berdon LLP will be formally introduced to TIAG and TAGLaw members from around the world.


The Center for Audit Quality (CAQ) issued the following statement by Executive Director Cindy Fornelli in support of Senate confirmation of Mary Jo White, Michael Piwowar, and Kara Stein to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC):

"The CAQ and the public company auditing profession congratulate Mary Jo White on her confirmation to a five-year term as the Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission. Chairman White has a proven record of enforcing the law in our capital markets and working diligently to protect investors.

Friedman LLP recently added Lee Shields, CPA, to its partner group. Shields, who joined the firm July 1, will work out of the Marlton, New Jersey, office. 

Sheilds has over twenty years of public accounting and tax experience, with clients in a wide variety of industries, including real estate, manufacturing, distribution, technology, and various service industries such as legal and medical practices. His expertise includes corporate, partnership, and individual income tax planning and preparation services; creating plans to minimize taxes for closely held companies and their stockholders; and representing clients before federal and state taxing authorities. Shields is a graduate of Elon University and is a licensed CPA in New Jersey.


Friedman LLP also announced its new Chief Marketing Officer Laura Kucera. Kucera assumed her new position on July 29 and will work out of the New York City office. 

Kucera is responsible for the marketing, communication, and business development efforts of the firm. With more than fifteen years of experience, she has hands-on knowledge of a wide variety of industries, including financial services, health care, technology, manufacturing, retail, media, real estate, and hospitality.

Prior to joining Friedman, Kucera served as the marketing director of Grant Thornton's National Financial Services and Capital Markets practices. She received a BA in psychology from Manhattanville College, and an MBA with a concentration in marketing from Iona College. 


Grant Thornton LLP named Mark Oster as national managing partner of its Not-for-Profit and Higher Education practices effective August 1. Oster, who also becomes part of the firm's National Leadership Team, succeeds Frank Kurre. Kurre was recently announced as the firm's new office managing partner of its New York practice.

Oster, a nineteen-year veteran of the firm, currently serves as the partner in charge of the firm's Not-for-Profit and Higher Education Business Advisory Services practice, a position he has held since 2004. He also is a member of Grant Thornton's national Not-for-Profit and Higher Education leadership cabinet, Health Care leadership group, and the firm's Client Experience Council. Prior to joining Grant Thornton, Oster served roles with a number of leading organizations, including Arthur Andersen and Simon & Schuster. He received a bachelor's degree in information systems from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. 


Grant Thornton LLPnamed Kevin Schroeder as the firm's energy industry managing partner effective August 1. He succeeds Brandon Sear, who will continue his role as the firm's energy industry technical partner.

Schroeder currently focuses on serving public energy companies and energy companies with IPO aspirations. He has significant international energy and natural resources industry experience, where he has audited and advised fully integrated, exploration and production, marketing and trading, transportation, and field services companies. Schroeder began his career with Grant Thornton in 1995 and rejoined the firm in 2007 as an Audit Services partner based in Oklahoma City, where he also served as the office's Oil and Gas practice leader. Prior to returning to Grant Thornton, he worked at KPMG in Houston, serving oil and gas companies, primarily SEC registrants, with domestic and international operations. He then spent five years in Russia working with some of the country's largest oil and gas companies. Schroeder is a CPA in Colorado, New York, and Oklahoma. He is on the advisory board for the Oklahoma State University School of Accounting. Schroeder received a bachelor's degree in business administration from Oklahoma State University.


Gross, Mendelsohn & Associates, P.A. is pleased to announce that Erin Doyle joined the firm as a paraprofessional accountant.

Doyle graduated from Anne Arundel Community College with an associate's degree in general studies and an associate's degree in financial accounting. She has 12 years of accounting experience.


Arlene R. Thayer (Ciroula), AAAPM, COO of KatzAbosch, has recently been inducted into Network 2000, a nonprofit organization founded in 1993 with the mission to promote the advancement of women in professional and executive positions. 

Thayer joins eighty-five other illustrious members who are all leaders in the Maryland business community, including judges, bank presidents, corporate COOs and CFOs, hospital CEOs, law firm partners, publishing executives, as well as fellow KatzAbosch shareholder, Jane M. Brewer, CPA, MST.

Last year, Thayer (previously known by her maiden name, Arlene Ciroula) became one of only four Accredited Administrator in Accounting Practice Management (AAAPM) professionals in the State of Maryland, and she was honored as Smart COO of the Year by SmartCEO magazine. 


The certified public accounting firm of Katz, Sapper & Miller LLP (KSM) is pleased to announce that Dan Sailer, CPA, CFA, has joined the firm's Valuation Services Group as a senior analyst.

Sailer has more than twelve years of experience in professional services, including eight years with a corporate financial advisory firm specializing in workouts, turnarounds, and restructurings. In his current role, he will provide valuation services for ESOPs, estates and gifts, transactions, and for other dispute or business planning purposes. Sailer received a BS degree in business administration from Indiana University.


PwC US announced that Miles Everson has been appointed US Advisory Services Leader, effective immediately. In this role, he is responsible for overseeing over 10,000 professionals focused on consulting, deals, and forensics services. Everson succeeds Dana Mcilwain, PwC partner and vice chair, who has been promoted to the new position of PwC services leader.

Everson previously served on the firm's US Advisory leadership team as Advisory Financial Services Leader, and earlier as Advisory Banking & Capital Markets Sector coleader. He was also PwC's Global Advisory Risk Consulting Leader, focused on helping large complex organizations with enterprise governance and risk management programs. With over twenty-five years of professional services experience, he currently works with some of the largest organizations in the world. Everson graduated from St. Cloud State University with a BS in accounting.

In Mcilwain's new leadership role, he will oversee PwC's three lines of service – assurance, advisory, and tax – to drive a unified strategy across the firm. He will also continue to focus on the continued development of advisory's global operating model as a member of the Global Advisory Leadership Team.


RubinBrown recently added Chad Oberg, CPA, as a manager in its Tax Services Group. John Herber, CPA, managing partner, made the announcement.

Oberg will provide federal, state, and local tax consulting and compliance services to clients in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, distribution, real estate, professional services, dealerships, and transportation. He served seven years in the US Air Force and earned the Air Force Leadership School Distinguished Graduate award during his service. He previously worked as a director of IT and senior manager for an accounting firm located in Woodland Hills, California. He is a graduate of California State University.


WTAS announced the opening of its sixteenth office in Houston, Texas, and the addition of new Managing Director Elliott Bossin and his team from E.M. Bossin & Company.

E.M. Bossin & Company was founded in 1991 by Elliott Bossin to provide tax consulting, accounting, and related financial planning to privately held businesses and high-net-worth individuals. Bossin started his career at Arthur Andersen and built E.M. Bossin & Company into a team of eleven, all of whom join the Houston office of WTAS. 

Bossin has more than forty years of experience in tax consulting and compliance in a number of areas, including estate and family tax, real estate, oil and gas, and corporate tax. He holds both a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Master of Accountancy from the University of Houston.

WTAS is now located in sixteen major cities in the United States and has an international presence in Europe through WTAS Global.
