Isn't it comforting to know that others are constantly looking out for us to make sure that new work equipment and new methods of working do not bring added health and safety risks?
Newly published research, "Health and safety of portable display screen equipment" carried out by System Concepts Ltd. on behalf of the Health and Safety Executive has found that the extensive use of portable computers in today's work activities is not associated with severe or novel health problems for their users.
Users can, however, suffer discomfort, and a number of steps are recommended to minimize this.
Two areas of risk are back and muscle strain from lugging heavy equipment (like bulky papers or peripheral devices such as printers, cables, and batteries) and using a portable in less than ideal locations such as cars or hotels, which could encourage poor posture. Many users complained at the weight of so-called portable computers.
