The cover story in the new issue of U.S. News & World Report focuses on the hottest jobs in 2000, and one of the most in-demand ones in the financial arena is an e-commerce accountant.

Just what does an e-commerce accountant do? Plenty, according to Susan Bradley, a CPA based in Fresno, CA, who advises clients on how to improve their bottom line by conducting business and selling goods or services over the Internet.

The magazine reports that this type of job can pay betweeen $28,500 to $54,250, depending on experience, which is comparable to midlevel salaries for accountants at midsize firms.

In a survey conducted by finance recruiter Robert Half, one in five CFOs said people working in the accounts receivable department was the area with the greatest number of positions to fill.

Dead last on the magazine's list were people who worked within credit accounting who have the task of tracking how much a company's customers owe for products or services.
