Today's exercise comes from the National Institutes of Health. You can use this exercise to strengthen the muscles in the back of the upper arm. You can do this exercise while sitting at your desk or you can stand up.
You'll need a towel to do this exercise properly, but never fear. If there's no towel handy, use something else, like a sweater or a belt.
- Hold one end of a towel in your right hand.
- Raise and bend right arm to drape the towel down your back. Keep your right arm in this position and continue holding onto the towel.
- Reach behind your lower back and grasp bottom end of the towel with your left hand.
- Climb your left hand progressively higher up the towel, which also has the effect of pulling your right arm down. Continue until your hands touch, or bring your hands as close as you can comfortably get to each other.
- Reverse positions.
Repeat 3 to 5 times each session. Hold each stretch for 10 to 30 seconds.
