Accountants get image conscious

Accountants are the latest group to succumb to the ‘Gok Wan effect,’ according to our sister site, AccountingWEB.co.uk, and a new survey.


TV stylist Gok Wan, famed for telling viewers “it’s all about the confidence,” is spreading his love of fashion to the British public – and it seems accountants are listening closely.


A new survey by recruitment experts has discovered that the stereotypical accountants’ grey suit is out, and designer threads are in.


Accountants now spend longer getting ready for work than they do for a night out on the town, with over half saying they take between 30 and 60 minutes to groom themselves for an interview, the survey found.


The recession has turned everyone into wannabe fashion experts, with over a third saying added competition for jobs during the downturn had made them more concerned about their appearance – but can looking good actually get you the job? Yes, according to 59% of respondents, who said it could tip the balance between two closely matched candidates.


It’s not just your fashion sense that’s under the microscope, according to these professionals – 98% felt their appearance indicated their commitment and attitude to the role.


“The added competition for jobs means that candidates need to pull out all the stops to secure a new position. Whilst appearance isn’t the deciding factor it can help to put a decision in your favour because it shows a certain level of professionalism and commitment to the role,” said Mark Sheldon, managing director at Hays Accountancy & Finance.


The recruiter also found that colours are a strong indicator when it comes to matching candidates with roles, with 85% of job seekers giving this careful consideration before interviews.
