How do I change the text Excel uses during autofill?

How do I change the text Excel uses during autofil

In Excel, you can put a month in a cell (like January) and then click the lower-right corner of that cell, drag down, and Excel will automatically populate the cells with the other months of the year.  How can you change the text Excel is using to populate that list?

This is managed by way of Excel's Custom Lists feature. The feature is accessed in one of 3 ways, depending upon the Excel version:

Excel 2010 and later: Choose File, Options, Advanced, and scroll down to the bottom and click Edit Custom Lists.

Excel 2007: Click the Office button, choose Excel Options, and click Edit Custom Lists in the Popular section.

Excel 2003: Choose Tools, Options, and then Custom Lists.

From there you can type the list in by hand, or click the Import button and select a list from an existing range of cells. Once you've added a list it becomes part of your Excel environment, which means in any spreadsheet you can type an item from the list in a cell and then drag the fill handle, just as you noted with the months.

If I do this, will the change just be attached to my current document, or is it global and Excel will retain it?

If I make a mess of this, is there a way to return everything to default? I don't see that anywhere in the dialogue box.

You can delete any custom lists that you've created if you need to start over. Simply click the list on the left-hand side of the Custom Lists dialog box, and then click Delete.

You can also do a fill series function (Alt+E+I+S or in 2007-2010 home ribbon, editing, fill, series). You will need a day and year for it to work but you can format the date and year away. On the series screen, make the type Date and the Date Unit Month, then make the step value 1 so that the next month appears.
