The Indiana CPA Society (INCPAS) was recently named one of the 2012 Best Places to Work in Indiana.

Created in 2006, the awards program is a project of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, BizVoice®, Inside INdiana Business, the Indiana Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, and Best Companies Group.

This statewide survey and awards program was designed to identify, recognize, and honor the organizations that are the best to work for in Indiana - those that benefit the state's economy, its workforce, and businesses.

The 2012 Best Places to Work in Indiana list is made up of 39 companies in the small- to medium-sized range (15 to 249 employees in the United States) and 31 large-sized companies (250+ employees in the United States).

To be considered for participation, companies had to fulfill the following eligibility requirements:

  1. Have at least 15 employees working in Indiana
  2. Be a for-profit or not-for-profit business or government entity
  3. Be a publicly or privately held business
  4. Maintain a facility in the state of Indiana, and
  5. Be in business for a minimum of 1 year

"I feel that the INCPAS is a great place to work because this organization offers and shows support to its staff", said Quintella Brooks, staff accountant for INCPAS. "I feel as though I'm part of a team. My thoughts and ideas matter."

Companies from across the state participated in a two-stage process to determine the winners:

  • The first stage consisted of evaluating each nominated company's workplace policies, practices, and demographics, for a total of 25 percent of the overall evaluation.
  • The second phase measured the employee's experience and was worth approximately 75 percent of the evaluation.

The employees' survey asked how satisfied they were with: their role in the organization, their relationship with their immediate supervisor, the organization's leadership and planning, the corporate culture and communications, the work environment, training and development opportunities, and pay and benefits. Employees were also asked to describe what their organization does that makes it a place where people would want to work.

The combined scores determined the top companies and the final ranking.

"We get to do great work for great people. Our members are very appreciative of what we do and everyone on staff is truly invested in finding ways to serve Indiana's CPAs", said Jennifer Briggs, CAE, vice president of member services for INCPAS. "We have a dedicated board of directors who think strategically about what will benefit the CPAs in Indiana as well as the public and employers who count on them. We all work well together to achieve the society's goals."

Briggs added the seemingly less-measurable core values are just as important in order to create a happy workplace.

"We care about one another, we laugh a lot, and we never miss an opportunity to have a celebratory cake", Briggs said.

The INCPAS will be recognized at the 2012 Best Places to Work in Indiana awards dinner coordinated by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, May 3. Final rankings will be announced at the event.

Currently, more than 7,000 CPAs in public practice, industry, government, and education are members of the INCPAS.
