Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, LLP (Baker Tilly) announced that Tammy Barboni, the firm's chief marketing officer, was recently named by the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal as one of the Women in Business Award winners. The award recognizes fifty of the Twin Cities' most influential women, including industry-leading executives, entrepreneurs, and business owners. Barboni was selected because of her professional achievements, leadership qualities, and contributions to the broader community.
Barboni joined Baker Tilly in 2009 and has more than twenty years' experience as a marketing professional in professional services. Prior to that, Barboni worked in the advertising and PR industries.
Barboni and the other winners were profiled May 24 in the Business Journal's Women in Business special publication.
Councilor, Buchanan & Mitchell, P.C. (CBM), a leading Bethesda, Maryland–based CPA and business advisory firm, announced that Robert Aceituno, CPA and tax manager, was presented with a Bicycle Commuter Spirit Award. Presented by Bethesda Transportation Solutions and the Bethesda Urban Partnership during Bethesda's annual Bike to Work Day celebration, the award recognizes the most dedicated bicycle commuters in the community.
An avid cyclist for six years, Aceituno was originally motivated by traffic congestion to bike the twenty-one miles to work, but his personal health and fitness goals also played a role in the decision. In addition, since DC and Bethesda are bike-friendly areas featuring numerous paths with scenic views, he continues to combine exercise with his commute when the weather allows.
TheFinancial Accounting Foundation (FAF) announced that it has appointed Dr. Terry D. Warfield, PwC Professor in Accounting and chair of the Department of Accounting and Information Systems at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, to the FAF Board of Trustees. The FAF is the independent, private-sector organization responsible for the oversight of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB).
Throughout his distinguished academic career, Dr. Warfield's research has focused on accounting standards and disclosure policies, including the effects of accounting information and disclosures on securities markets.
From 1995 to 1996, Dr. Warfield served as the academic accounting fellow in the Office of the Chief Accountant at the US Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, DC. In that position, he worked on projects related to financial instruments and financial institutions, and he helped coordinate a symposium on intangible asset financial reporting. Previously, Dr. Warfield worked in the banking industry.
He also has previously served as a member of the Financial Accounting Standards Advisory Council (FASAC), the principal advisory body to the Financial Accounting Standards Board. He has been a member of the FASB's Financial Accounting Standards Research Initiative Advisory Board, a group that facilitates outreach to the academic community on issues related to the FASB agenda.
Dr. Warfield holds a bachelor's degree and master's degree in business administration from Indiana University and a PhD from the University of Iowa.
Dr. Warfield's appointment fills a vacancy on the trustees with a term that extends to December 2015; at that time, he will be eligible to be reappointed for an additional three years.
Grant Thornton LLP named Carlos A. Otal managing partner of Global Public Sector Financial Management Advisory and Audit Services. In this role, Otal will lead Grant Thornton's rapidly growing financial management consulting and assurance offerings to federal, state, local, and international governments.
Otal has nearly twenty-five years of experience spanning the full range of financial management services – from internal and financial statement auditing to organizational and process improvement to the assessment and implementation of enterprise systems, including program management, strategy, acquisition, and business model development for clients installing enterprise solutions, implementing large-scale commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software, or migrating to a shared service provider. Since joining Grant Thornton in 2005, he has led a successful array of financial management and systems engagements for a wide variety of clients, including the US departments of the Treasury, Energy, and Defense, as well as the US Social Security Administration, US Office of Personnel Management, and the state of California.
A CPA, Otal earned a bachelor's in accounting from Virginia Tech and a certificate in project management from George Washington University.
Otal is a leader in the development and execution of the annual AGA Federal Financial Systems Summits, and was a principal contributor to AGA's Research Report No. 31: Government-wide Financial Reporting, which documented progress made in federal financial management and reporting, but also made substantive recommendations for compiling the federal government's audited financial statements.

Andrew J. Daniel E. Tad Chew, Real Estate Services Group: Chew graduated summa cum laude from Indiana State University (ISU) with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. He later received a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from ISU. Prior to joining the firm, Chew taught second grade at Staunton Elementary School in Brazil, Indiana.
Cameron Gentry, Audit and Assurance Services Department: Gentry graduated from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) with bachelor's degrees in accounting, finance, and international studies with a minor in political science from the Kelley School of Business Indianapolis (KSBI). While a student at IUPUI, he worked at the career planning office and served as treasurer of the KSBI Accounting Association.
Timothy Murphy, Audit and Assurance Services Department: Murphy received a Bachelor of Science in Accounting with a minor in finance from Purdue University, where he also earned a Certificate of Advanced Accountancy from the Krannert School of Management. While a student at Purdue, Murphy volunteered for a local not-for-profit where he prepared tax returns for low-income individuals.
Manal Corwin has returned to KPMG LLP, the US audit, tax, and advisory firm, to assume key positions within the firm's international taxation group, following completion of her tenure as deputy assistant secretary of Tax Policy for International Tax Affairs at the US Department of the Treasury. Corwin will serve both as the national service line leader for International Corporate Services and in the newly created role of principal-in-charge, Washington National Tax-International Tax Policy.
Prior to serving in the Treasury Department (first as the international tax counsel in the Office of Tax Policy and then as the deputy assistant secretary for International Tax Affairs), Corwin was a principal in Washington National Tax at KPMG from 2001 to 2009 where she advised multinational corporations on international tax aspects of their operations and transactions in the United States and represented clients in tax controversies before the IRS.
Earlier in her career, from 1992 to 1999, Corwin practiced as an attorney at the law firm of Covington & Burling in Washington, DC, and served as a judicial clerk for then Chief Judge Levin Campbell on the US Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.
Corwin is a member of the Massachusetts and the District of Columbia bar associations. She is a 1991 graduate of the Boston University School of Law, where she was editor-in-chief of the Law Review. She earned her undergraduate degree from Harvard University in 1986.

MeritShare celebrated the first round of winners of the Best People to Work With award. The awards are given to companies who demonstrate high levels of employee participation in peer-to-peer recognition. The companies were selected from over 400 different companies, organizations, and teams who enrolled in MeritShare's peer-to-peer recognition program.
MeritShare announced the following six award winners: Beachmint, First Rehab Life, Green Hasson Janks LLP, SchoolSpring, Trophies2go, and Zumobi.
The type of recognition can vary by company, and the defining characteristic of peer recognition is that the award nomination is made by coworkers and peers as opposed to supervisors and managers. Green Hasson Janks's employees give an Encourage New Ideas award to foster creative thinking.
MeritShare will announce the next set of winners in July 2013 based on all companies that have deployed a peer-to-peer recognition program by June 2013.
Oakland Zoo is excited to announce the promotion of Nik Dehejia, director of Strategic Initiatives, to chief financial officer (CFO).
Dehejia joined Oakland Zoo in the fall of 2006 as director of Strategic Initiatives. He has led planning of the zoo's transformational California Trail, a three-stage, multimillion-dollar project that includes a new veterinary hospital (opened in 2012), a biodiversity center opening this summer, and the California Trail scheduled to open in 2016. Additionally, Dehejia has managed community engagement and cultivated relationships with the zoo's varied stakeholders.
Dehejia started his career in international and environmental public policy at the World Resources Institute and the World Bank, and in corporate responsibility at Business for Social Responsibility in San Francisco. He later held responsibilities for licensing and merchandising at Levi Strauss & Co. Dehejia holds an MBA from UC Berkeley; is a fifteen-year resident of the Bay Area; and currently serves on the board of trustees of Heyday, an independent, nonprofit California-focused publisher.
In his new position as CFO, Dehejia will direct institution-wide financial functions with a focus on accounting, planning, and information technology. He will be responsible for evaluating, directing, implementing, and communicating approved plans as well as managing the zoo's strategic and operating plans/budgets. He will continue to serve as a government and community liaison.

Strickland brings more than thirty years of experience in architectural design, construction management, investment tax credit, and cost segregation studies. A registered architect, his unique qualifications will expand the firm's cost segregation and related real estate consulting capabilities across the firm in support of the Tax, Real Estate, and Consulting groups.
Prior to joining WeiserMazars, Strickland was the director at Geller & Company. Over his professional career, Strickland has led a number of cost-segregation practices at national and international firms, such as Arthur D. Little Valuation, Deloitte, and Arthur Andersen. He served as a designer, project manager, and owner's representative on a wide variety of regional and national projects in the public and private sectors. Strickland was an expert witness on a complex replacement cost-estimate case and advised participants in numerous high-profile real estate acquisitions and construction projects throughout the United States.
Strickland, a registered architect in Pennsylvania and Connecticut, holds a Master of Architecture from Carnegie-Mellon University, a Master of Education, and a BA in sociology from Lehigh University. He was a reviewer of the IRS Audit Techniques Guide for Cost Segregation as well as multiple industry specific depreciation guidelines. He is an instructor of the course "Cost Estimating for Cost Segregation" for RS Means and was an editor/reviewer of Practice of Cost Segregation Analysis.
Daryl Duenkel, a manager in Wipfli LLP's health care information technology group, has been elected president elect of the Health Information Management Systems Society's Dairyland Chapter. In this leadership position, Duenkel will guide the mission of National Health Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS) organization at the state level.
In his position with Wipfli, Duenkel provides a variety of management consulting services to health care clients, including technology planning, system selection, and systems implementation. He is a fellow with HIMSS and has obtained the designation of Certified Professional in Health Information Systems. He is also a member of the Project Management Institute in which he obtained the designation of Project Management Professional. Duenkel holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Cardinal Stritch College.
