The Nominating Committee of the American Institute for Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) in New York has recently selected Robert Bunting, Chairman of Moss Adams LLP, to become the Vice Chairman of the AICPA and Chairman-elect, effective October 1, 2003. The 350,000-member group claims about 85% of all U.S. CPAs as members and has thousands of members in other countries.

A Long Career of Service to the Accounting Profession

Bunting has been a CPA in public practice for over 30 years. After receiving his initial training and experience in auditing, he practiced in financial and information systems consulting. In 1972, Bunting became head of Moss Adams' Consulting Division; a position he held until 1981. In 1981, he was appointed to his current position as Chairman at Moss Adams. During his tenure as Chairman at Moss Adams, the firm grew from $13 million in revenues to $175 million to become the 10th largest firm in the U.S.

Bunting will be the first AICPA Chairman from Moss Adams, and only the 4th Chairman from west of the Rocky Mountains in the last 30 years. The appointment speaks very well for the entire firm and for Bunting's personal accomplishments, which include the following:

  • President, Washington Society of CPAs, 1987-1988
  • Chairman, AICPA Assurance Services Executive Committee
  • Chairman, AICPA Board of Examiners – providing oversight for the preparation, administration, and grading of the Uniform CPA Exam, 1989-1992
  • Member, AICPA Board of Directors, 1986-1990
  • Member, AICPA Board—Audit Committee, 1987-1990
  • SEC Executive Committee, 1990-1991
  • International Chairman of Moores Rowland International, 1996-2002.

"It is a challenging time for our profession and the AICPA will play a critical role in meeting those challenges. I look forward to having the opportunity to be a positive force for change in our profession." said Bunting.
