BKR International, one of the world's leading accounting associations, has increased the size of its annual international scholarship awarded to accounting students in 2013 in a program the association initiated last year.
This year, future accountancy practitioner winners around the world will receive $3,000 each towards costs incurred in obtaining their professional credentials. Last year, scholarship winners received awards of $2,000 each.
Thus far, BKR International has made the following awards in three of its regions:
- BKR Asia/Pacific Winner: Tan Shee Ying from Penang, Malaysia
- BKR Europe/Middle East/Africa Winners: Alin Stan and Roxanna Niculi from Bucharest, Romania
- BKR Americas Winner: Brittany Jones from Charleston, South Carolina
A fifth and final scholarship for the year will be presented at BKR International's Annual Worldwide Meeting in Dublin, Ireland, October 19-22, 2013. Scholarship recipients are proposed by local firms in each region and approved by the World Board.
In announcing the awards, Angelo Colombo, chairman of the 150-firm strong BKR International, says",Quality people are the pivotal element in growing a successful accounting practice. BKR and its member firms recognize how crucial it is to help young accountants around the world who will become our profession's future leaders."
Colombo adds that even in highly developed countries, many promising accounting students continue to face academic and financial challenges. The BKR annual scholarship recognizes their efforts. "Nominees among the globe's young, future practitioners must be working toward a professional accounting qualification and demonstrate considerable initiative in their work or studies to be awarded a BKR scholarship."
