VSCPA offers free 12-month financial literacy calendar

The award-winning 2008 Financial Fitness Calendar is now available from the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA). Developed in partnership with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the 12-month wall calendar is a free consumer resource as part of the VSCPA's financial literacy initiative to improve the financial health of Virginians. Called Financial Fitness, the campaign is part of a national effort of the CPA profession to reach out to the community and educate the public — from schoolchildren to retirees — on topics related to money management and fiscal responsibility.

"Recent statistics reveal the United States is suffering from a decline in the level of financial literacy among its citizens," said Monique T. Valentine, CPA, chair of the VSCPA Board of Directors. "The VSCPA is honored to provide this free calendar and other valuable resources to help Virginians get back on track. The CPA profession has a long tradition of helping individuals and businesses realize their financial goals. The VSCPA and its members take this responsibility very seriously and we're here to help."

Besides serving as a wall calendar, the VSCPA Financial Fitness Calendar is also a financial literacy resource guide. It's loaded with year-round money management advice on topics like budget planning, saving for the future, understanding credit and wise investments as well as important tax and financial dates to remember, definitions of common financial terms and contact information for additional financial assistance.

The calendar also features four Virginia CPAs with diverse financial backgrounds, including Robert M. Moore Jr., CPA of Suffolk, partner at Boyce, Spady & Moore PLC; Beth A. Bickford, CPA of Glen Allen, president & CEO of The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen; Monique T. Valentine, CPA of Manassas, chief financial officer at the Associated General Contractors of America; and John Gordon, CPA of Lorton, senior vice president of finance and controller with Black Entertainment Television Networks.

2008 Financial Fitness Calendars are available to consumers free of charge online at www.FinancialFitness.org, or you can request a printed copy by contacting the VSCPA at financialfitness@vscpa.com or (800) 733-8272.

Other facets of the VSCPA's award-winning Financial Fitness initiative include managing a consumer Web site, www.FinancialFitness.org, to serve as a clearinghouse of financial resources. The site includes free financial planning articles, a downloadable template for a personal spending plan, online sign-up for a free Financial Fitness e-newsletter, financial check-up quiz and more. The site also provides pro bono assistance and online guides for nonprofit organizations. The nonprofit guides contain information about important tax issues; liability and responsibility of Board members; a budgeting guide; and a toolkit for nonprofit auditing committees.
