With today's competitive labor market, it's essential for firms to retain their valuable creative and marketing professionals. The following management tips can help you keep creative ideas flowing - and keep your valued professionals on board long-term.

The Power of Praise

When employees do an exceptional job, tell them so. A creative professional's work is often evaluated subjectively, and compliments can provide much needed encouragement.

The Back-Handed Compliment

Don't follow a compliment with criticism. It negates the positive message you're trying to convey.

Break the Creative Block

Due to the nature of creative work, it's not unusual for professionals to have a creative slump. When this happens, be prepared to help the employee get back on track. One strategy is to place the person on an entirely new type of project that requires a different set of skills. Your office environment should also lend itself to fostering creativity. Provide an outlet for employees to break from the routine and recharge, and make sure your workplace atmosphere is both fun and productive.

Listen Attentively

Ask your staff questions - and listen to their answers. Soliciting employees' opinions and then ignoring or dismissing their feedback undermines both morale and commitment.

Work/Life Balance

To attract and keep the best talent, show employees you're aware of their lives beyond work. If you allow staff some measure of control over their work schedules, they can devote their time on the job to being as productive and creative as possible.

Double the Pleasure

If your company offers merit raises, consider giving half as much twice a year, instead of a single sum annually. Employees will feel they're receiving two rewards instead of one.

Don't be "Bossy"

The performance of your staff has a lot to do with your performance as a supervisor. The most successful "boss" is really a combination of mentor, coach and motivator who leads through consensus.

Work Hard But Smart

Don't assume that your department is well-run just because employees look busy. Does all the frenetic activity actually result in high productivity levels and sufficient output? Make sure deadlines are being met and employees are using their time wisely.
