Pentium 4 Chip Available Thanksgiving Week

The green men on the latest round of Intel commercials touting the strength of the Pentium 3 chip either will have to hire a fourth person or clone themselves.

After months of anticipation, Pentium announced this week at COMDEX that their Pentium 4 chip would be ready on Monday, Nov. 20. Although resellers may have the chips on hand sooner, users of PCs won't see the new chip installed in desktop computers until some time next year.

The cost for a PC running a Pentium 4 chip is estimated at $2,200, and higher-priced computers with enough memory to support the chip may run as high as $3,000.

Those who shrink at the horror of spending this much for a fast PC need not worry; company officials already have said that these are starting prices, and like every other aspect of the PC market, the costs will decrease quickly. Lower-priced Pentium 4's are expected to begin hitting the market in the second half of 2001, and perhaps earlier.
