Tax Rebate Checks Languishing at IRS
The tax rebate program that produced checks for most of the nation's taxpayers earlier this summer also resulted in a stockpile of unclaimed rebate checks which are waiting to be claimed.
Nearly 300,000 rebate checks were returned to the IRS, undeliverable due to changes of address or taxpayer name changes, many of which could have resulted from marriages or divorces.
The rebate checks were issued in amounts up to $300 for single individuals, $500 for heads of households, and $600 for married couples.
Taxpayers have until December 5 to claim the checks. Checks not claimed by that time will not be delivered and instead taxpayers will have an opportunity to claim their rebates on their tax returns in the spring.
Taxpayers who have not yet received a rebate check and who believe they are entitled to a check may call the IRS at 800-829-1040. A taxpayer who has moved should file Form 8822 with the IRS notifying the agency of the address change.
