IRS Web Site is Quick Source for Forms, Publications

The IRS Web site, www.irs.gov, performed up to five times faster during the 2000 tax filing season than it did in the previous year. Taxpayers and tax practitioners searching for federal tax forms and publications found it took only two to three seconds for the IRS home page to appear, according to a new study by the General Accounting Office.

The number of visits to the Web site increased during the period of January to June of 2000 by 31% to 1.3 billion compared to the previous spring. Numbers are expected to grow this spring, according to IRS Commissioner Charles O. Rossotti,

The GAO report expressed concern about the timeliness and accuracy of information presented on the IRS site. This year, the IRS has turned over the maintenance of its Web site to the Electronic Tax Administration. Previously no one in particular had responsibility for ensuring that the material on the site was both current and accurate.
