Federal and State Tax Returns Due on Tuesday, April 17

Individual taxpayers have an extra day to file income tax returns, extensions, and estimated tax payments this year due to the Washington D.C. holiday, Emancipation Day, which is Monday, April 16.

Normally, when the traditional April 15 tax filing day falls on a weekend, as it does this year, the Monday after the weekend becomes the filing due date. This year, however, since that Monday is a holiday in D.C., the IRS is giving taxpayers an extra day to file their federal income tax returns.

Partnership returns are also due on Tuesday, April 17.

All states that normally have an April 15 filing date have followed the federal schedule and have agreed to use Tuesday, April 17 as the filing deadline this year for income tax returns, extensions, and estimated payments.

Next year the filing date will be on Monday, April 15, 2013.
