*** PLATT'S PERSPECTIVE ***

In many CPA firms, this week-after-tax-season period tends to be like January is for many individuals -- a time to make resolutions, recommit to getting organized, explore new training classes for self-improvement, and other get-it-together activities that bring with them the promise of a simpler, better, more efficient life.

If you are disciplined and good at this, congratulations - pursue as many of these activities as you feel you can handle. If, like me, you tend to make bold resolutions and then find yourself not quite as committed as you thought you would be, then it may be time to consider a different approach.

Like diet and exercise, getting organized is a discipline, and one that works better if there is someone to be accountable to. Whether it's your spouse, a colleague at work, or an executive coach, seek out someone and tell them what you want to do, and ask them to regularly monitor your progress. You'll be amazed at the tremendous strides you can take if there is someone around to hold you accountable!

At the same time the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) is warning auditors not to overdo internal controls testing, the government is revamping portions of the law that required the testing in the first place.

  1. Lawmakers Take Up Tough ID Theft Bill

A series of high-profile security breaches has prompted lawmakers to consider requiring companies to notify consumers if their personal information has been lost, stolen or otherwise released.

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced on Thursday that large public companies won't have to expense options until the fiscal year beginning after December 15, 2005.
