July 13 is Summer Learning Day

“The overarching goal of Summer Learning Day is to celebrate the importance of high-quality summer learning opportunities in the lives of young people and their families,” Rob Fairchild, director of the Center for Summer Learning at the John Hopkins University, which sponsors the observance.

Today, 21 cities will celebrate the third annual National Summer Learning Day, dedicated to the importance of high-quality summer learning opportunities to prevent K-12 students from succumbing to the “summer slide”. Celebrations include:

  • “Books: They’re Full of Drama!” a program featuring the integration of reading with drama and history at Coldstream Park Elementary School in Baltimore, Maryland. The school will also offer theatrical performances depicting heroic Americans like Martin Luther King Jr., Maya Angelou and President John F. Kennedy.

  • Morry’s Camp in White Plains, N.Y., is hosting an Education Expo, an evening of fun and learning that will showcase projects and activities campers have completed during the summer.

  • Guests will read stories and attend a party with children and their families during a Special Guest Storytime at the East Lake County Library in Sorrento, Fla.

  • Casey Elementary School in Columbia, Kentucky, is showcasing student-produced plays, puppet shows and music videos before an audience of school district employees, families and the community.

  • Senators Barbra Mikulski (D-MD) and Barrack Obama (D-IL) are hosting “Creating Opportunities for High-Quality Summer Learning” at noon Eastern Time in Washington, D.C.

Summer programs send young people back to school each fall ready to learn, with less need for review of what they learned the previous school year, according to Fairchild.
