Internet Keeps Growing
The number of people signing onto the Internet increased to 66 million in August – a 6.5 percent increase over July’s count. The total number of users with Net access now exceeds 108 million, according to a report by Internet Research Group, NetRatings.
As users increase, so must web traffic. MediaMatrix conducts monthly surveys of web traffic. According to their latest survey the five most visited sites are America Online, Yahoo!, Microsoft, Lycos and Go Network. These sites have been the leaders for quite some time.
If you give surfers something, you just might increase traffic to your site. One of the sites hitting the survey’s Top 50 List is Freeshop.com, a site that lets people know about free deals found on the Web. Another site, TreeLoot.com, is increasing traffic with a “click-and-win” contest where surfers have a chance to win up to $30,000 a day.
The online shopping industry has grown 35 percent since the same time last year. However, not all online businesses are feeling the Net growth. Adult content and travel sites saw web traffic drop 3.7 percent.
Voice of the Editor
Which isn’t completely true. I mean, occasionally I drop by when I manage to sneak out of the nonstop frat party over at Going Concern, but I’m mostly a wallflower over there. I’m happy to say that I’ve been given express permission (or explicit orders, if you like) to wander over here to AccountingWEB more often.
Why is that, you might ask? My job is to replace the irreplaceable Gail Perry as Editor-in-Chief. What does that mean? I don’t really know! I think it’ll be fun getting a feel for things, throwing in my own thoughts here and there, and listening to the discussions you’re having about the accounting profession.
