Virginia society names Valentine chair

The Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA) has selected Monique T. Valentine, CPA of Manassas as chair of its Board of Directors for the 2007–2008 fiscal year. Valentine, chief financial officer of the Associated General Contractors of America in Arlington, has a long history of leadership in the VSCPA and the community.

“I’m honored to be chosen as the next chair of the Virginia Society of CPAs, and am excited to begin my year,” said Valentine. “VSCPA volunteer leaders and professional staff work tirelessly to promote and enhance the success of Virginia’s CPAs and I’m very excited to be part of such an incredible organization.”

At the VSCPA’s annual business meeting, Valentine outlined the VSCPA’s top five goals for the upcoming year. These goals include advancing the advocacy of CPA interests in Virginia’s legislative and regulatory arena; enhancing its award-winning Financial Fitness campaign to help improve the financial health of all Virginians; building a strong membership and flourishing community of CPAs; enhancing the VSCPA’s continuing professional education (CPE) offerings; and becoming an “association of the future” through a focus on new technology and engaging young professionals.

Prior to joining the Associated General Contractors of America, Valentine worked with the National Parks Conservation Association and Global Impact (formerly International Service Agencies). She also has her own accounting practice serving approximately 350 clients in compilation of financial statements, individual and business tax returns, small business consulting and tax planning. She earned her bachelor’s degree in accounting from George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. in 1986 and received her CPA designation in 1988. She has also been named a Super CPA by Virginia Business magazine.

Valentine is active in her community, speaking to local churches, nonprofits and students and having served as an elder at Manassas Presbyterian Church. Prior to her appointment as chair of the VSCPA, Valentine has served as a Board member, committee chair and numerous task forces. She is a past president of the VSCPA Northern Chapter and was named its Outstanding Member of the Year in 1993 and 2000. She is a member of the American Institute of CPAs and American Society of Association Executives.
