RSM McGladrey partners with Special Olympics for The PGA McGladrey Team Championship

RSM McGladrey, the fifth largest tax, accounting, and business consulting firm in the U.S., has announced a new partnership with Special Olympics as the official charity of The PGA McGladrey Team Championship.

The new partnership will support Special Olympics athletes by providing financial support and opportunities for them to enhance their golf game by participating in certain PGA McGladrey Team Championship events throughout the country. The partnership also provides a national charitable organization for RSM McGladrey and creates opportunities for employees and clients to get more involved with the Championship through volunteerism.

"The PGA McGladrey Team Championship is all about the power of teamwork and the idea that you can achieve almost anything if you have the right team," said Steve Tait, president of RSM McGladrey. "We are thrilled that Special Olympics is now part of The PGA McGladrey Team Championship and we look forward to the passion the Special Olympics involvement adds to this great event. Working with Special Olympics further demonstrates the shared values of giving back, the sport of golf and the accounting profession."

The partnership officially launched at the second annual PGA McGladrey Team Championship being held Oct. 20 - 22 at Pinehurst (NC) Resort.

"The PGA McGladrey Team Championship will offer our athletes the opportunity to enhance their Special Olympics participation and play golf alongside members of their communities as well as with some of the best athletes in the country," said Bob Gobrecht, Managing Director of Special Olympics North America. "In addition to this being an incredibly exciting opportunity for our athletes, Special Olympics is grateful for the support of RSM McGladrey and for the ongoing relationship with The PGA of America."

A silent auction was conducted on October 19 at The PGA McGladrey Team Championship national finals. During this event, more than 70 collectibles were available for bid, including a signed volleyball by Misty May-Treanor, a Tiger Woods autographed lithograph and a weekend stay and round of golf in Sapphire National. All proceeds raised by the auction will benefit Special Olympics.

Beginning in 2009, The PGA McGladrey Team Championship will donate a portion of every Local Qualifying Event entry fee to the Special Olympics. During the national finals, the Championship will host a silent auction with donated items from Pinehurst, The PGA of America, and Team McGladrey: PGA TOUR professionals Zach Johnson and Chris DiMarco and LPGA Tour professional Natalie Gulbis.

PGA McGladrey Team Championship fundraising efforts also will be conducted at Local Qualifying Events nationwide, as well as 41 Section Championships and the National Championship.

In addition, RSM McGladrey will provide Special Olympics athletes the opportunity to participate as golfers and Global Messengers, speaking on behalf of Special Olympics at PGA McGladrey Team events.

"The PGA of America is very proud to welcome Special Olympic athletes into The PGA McGladrey Team Championship, an event that bears the theme, 'With the right team, anything's possible,'" said PGA of America President Brian Whitcomb. "Our more than 28,000 men and women PGA Professionals have teamed together and embraced the Special Olympics golf program and its many athletes throughout the country. Our member professionals recognize the passion the athletes bring to learning the game of golf, and we can't think of a better match-up than having Special Olympics join us in enhancing The PGA McGladrey Team Championship."

The Special Olympics Golf program is centered on two educational phases designed to encompass all skill levels: learning to swing a golf club and learning to play the game. Athletes may participate in Skills, 9-hole, or 18- hole stroke play. Special Olympics athletes can also participate in Unified Sports Golf Team Play. Special Olympics Unified Sports is a program that combines Special Olympics athletes and athletes without intellectual disabilities on sports teams for training and competition. Golf was introduced as an official Special Olympics sport in 1995. Today approximately 14,000 Special Olympics athletes have chosen to play golf.

The PGA McGladrey Team Championship is The PGA of America's first nationwide grassroots best-ball amateur championship. Debuting in 2007, the championship is a result of a partnership between The PGA of America and RSM McGladrey, the official Accounting Tax and Business Consulting firm of The PGA of America.
