Hot Dogs, Peanuts, Shredded Documents: Andersen Night at The Ball Park

In what may strike some as a bizarre promotion, the San Diego Padres' AAA affiliate, the Portland (OR) Beavers, are warming up for an "Arthur Andersen Appreciation Night," scheduled for next Thursday, July 18.

The game will feature document shredding stations around the stadium where baseball fans can bring their own documents to be shredded. The $5 ticket price will entitle participants to a $10 receipt, "to be used as a one-time non-recurring charge." As part of the fun, Beavers' executives will be entitled to re-sell their tickets out the back door of the ticket booths. Anyone who can show he or she is named "Andersen" or "Arthur" will be admitted for free, and the first person who comes to the game who is actually named "Arthur Andersen" will receive a gift package that includes a luxury suite party for 80.

During the game, fans will be encouraged to search for money certificates that can be used in the stadium as part of a "Massive Debt Hide-and-Go-Seek" promotion. Stadium workers will don placards touting the inflated rate of pay ballplayers will secretly report for the evening's entertainment.

"It's meant to be tongue-in-cheek and for people to have some fun with it," said team spokesman Chris Metz.

The evening's game against the Edmonton Trappers will start at 7:05 p.m. Oh, and did we mention? The Beavers' ballpark is the PGE Park - for Pacific General Electric - owned by Enron Corp.
