Gershon, Pierce, Lissak & Co. Merges with WithumSmith+Brown

The Morristown-based certified public accounting firm of Gershon, Pierce, Lissak & Company, P.C. (GPL) recently merged with the regional firm of WithumSmith+Brown (WS+B), Certified Public Accountants and Consultants. Joining WS+B as shareholders and principals are Barry W. Pierce, CPA; Marietta Bennett, CPA; Robert J. Crigler, CPA; John J. Krystofik, CPA; Timothy A. Brezinsky, CPA; Donald Scheier, EA, and Gary Kollet, CPA, along with 26 staff members.

As managing partner of GPL, Pierce has 34 years of professional accounting experience. He is a licensed CPA in the states of New Jersey and New York and is a member of the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants (NJSCPA), the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA) and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). His professional career has focused on auditing, tax planning and consulting for privately-held companies. Pierce has appeared as an expert witness and has been appointed by numerous judges in various litigation matters in Morris, Essex and Hunterdon counties. He has also been appointed to serve on the District Committee for Attorney Ethics.

Bennett began her career at Alexander Grant & Company (now Grant Thornton) in New York City. She is a licensed CPA in the states of New York and New Jersey. At GPL she was the quality control director responsible for auditing and accounting services. Bennett’s experience also includes audits, reviews and compilations of closely-held businesses, professional service firms and not-for-profit entities including schools, charities, trade associations and benefit plans. She currently serves as trustee for 20 joint defense funds, overseeing their administration. Bennett is a member of the AICPA and NJSCPA, where she has served on various committees, and is treasurer/board member of the Parsippany Day Care Center.

Crigler's professional career began in 1986. He is a licensed CPA in the state of New Jersey and is a member of the AICPA and NJSCPA. His accounting background includes a court appointment in Somerset County as a fiscal agent, computerization of accounting records and data processing, mergers and acquisitions, and tax planning and consulting primarily for privately-held companies. Crigler has serviced clients in several industries including real estate development, restaurant services, retail, manufacturing, health care services and mortgage banking.

Krystofik entered the accounting profession over 30 years ago. He is a licensed CPA in the state of New Jersey and is a member of the AICPA, NJSCPA and NYSSCPA. He was formerly co-editor of the "Money Management" column published in various newspapers throughout New Jersey and is currently a member of the Federal Tax Committee of the NJSCPA. He is also a member of the tax division of the AICPA. His professional career has included auditing, tax planning and consulting for companies ranging in size from small sole proprietorships and closely-held businesses to large publicly-owned multi-state corporations, involving such industries as banking, manufacturing, retail, investments and real estate.

Brezinsky has worked in the accounting field for over 20 years. He is a licensed CPA and is a member of the AICPA and the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants. He was an audit partner at GPL responsible for the firm's accounting and tax systems consulting practice. Brezinsky has extensive experience in audits, reviews and compilations of closely-held businesses, professional service firms, benefit plans, non-profit organizations, tax compliance and planning, financial planning, business consulting and computer services.

Scheier has over 25 years of experience in taxation and administration of trusts, estates and foundations. He joined GPL in 1998 as a principal where he specialized in taxation. Scheier is a member of the New Jersey and New York Societies of the National Association of Enrolled Agents as well as the National Society of Accountants and the International Association of Registered Financial Consultants. He was previously a manager of the Court Accounting Group and supervisor of the Fiduciary Tax Department of a trust company.

Kollet began his career in accounting over 20 years ago. He is a licensed CPA in the states of New Jersey and New York and is a member of the AICPA. He is also a member of the tax division of the AICPA and a member of the Estate, Trust and Gift Taxation Interest Group of the NJSCPA. Prior to becoming a CPA, Kollet was an enrolled agent qualified to practice before the Internal Revenue Service. His professional career has included auditing, accounting, tax planning and consulting for individuals and companies ranging from sole proprietorships to closely-held businesses.

GPL was founded in 1984. The firm’s clients include companies in the middle market and small privately-held businesses in a variety of industries. In addition, GPL provides financial planning and tax compliance services to individuals, estate and trust administration, litigation support, joint defense funds administration and forensic accounting.
