Following is the latest roundup of accounting community news for the week of February 7, 2011.
Adams, Brown, Beran & Ball, Chartered recently announced that Tavish Hall and Danielle M. Hoffman have obtained their CPA designations. In her role as staff accountant, Hoffman provides tax returns, tax research, and audit services for the firm. Hall provides tax planning services, and prepares individual, partnership, corporate, and non-profit tax returns. Hall also is involved with providing audit services to several city and county municipal audits.
Barfield Murphy Shank & Smith announced the formation of its State & Local Tax Services Group (SALT). The group is led by Don Murphy, Steve Smith, Karen Poist, and Kim Tarnakow.
BDO recently announced the admission of a new member firm in Kosovo. BDO Kosovo, which anticipates rapid growth over the next few years, will provide audit, internal audit, and risk assessment services, as well as consulting and due diligence for foreign investors. The firm was founded in August 2010 as an initiative of BDO Croatia.
Thomas F. Roche, III, CPA, was recognized as a 2011 FIVE STAR Wealth Manager on a list published in the January issue of New Jersey Monthly. Roche is the managing Member of the wealth management firm FMRTD Financial Resources, LLC.

The IMA Foundation of Applied Research (FAR) is inviting the academic community to participate in its Call for Proposals for new management accounting research on the topics of sustainability reporting and business intelligence/analytics. Proposal submissions must be submitted by April 30, 2011.
Lattimore Black Morgan & Cain, PC (LBMC) has added Jared Chaffin to its Brentwood (Nashville) office in a staff position in the accounting and assurance services department. The firm also added Adam Lukasik, CPA, to its Brentwood location. Lukasik joined the accounting firm in a senior position in the accounting and assurance services department. LBMC Technologies, LLC, a member of the LBMC Family of Companies, announced that Ken Allgood has been added to its Brentwood office. Allgood, a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP), has been added as a network engineer. Rana Potter also has been added to the Brentwood office as a Microsoft Dynamics CRM consultant.
Leone, McDonnell & Roberts, Professional Association recently announced the addition of Melissa Carter, CPA, to its professional staff. Carter works in the firm’s North Conway, New Hampshire office.
Jeffrey L. Staley, CPA, of Maner Costerisan, was recently appointed to the local YMCA Advisory Board. The firm also announced the promotions of Timothy H. Adams, CPA, ABV, to tax department head, and David B. Caldwell to business solutions and technology department head.
The Middle States Association Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools (MSA-CESS), a non-profit regional accreditation agency, has elected Sherri Peters to its secondary board of commissioners. Peters is a subgrants manager for the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs and member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
Pannell Kerr Forster of Texas, P.C. (PKF Texas) announced that the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts (NACVA) has awarded Director of Audit Dan Ramey, CPA, the Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA) credential. The firm also recently hosted a 27-member delegation from the China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (SINOPEC) at the request of the Houston Mayor’s office. SINOPEC is one of China’s largest integrated energy and chemical companies.
Rice, Sullivan & Co. has promoted to manager Kristen B. Schuler, CPA. Schuler joined the firm in 2007. As a manager, she specializes in providing comprehensive audit, compilation, and tax services to the firm’s clients.
Smith Elliott Kearns & Company, LLC recently announced that Mark T. Hartshorn, MST, and Melissa L. Soto have successfully completed the requirements to be licensed as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Hartshorn is based in the Hagerstown, Maryland, office, but is an active tax resource for staff members and the community in all four office locations. Soto is a senior associate working from the firm’s Hagerstown office.
Sean Muller, CPA, has joined Weaver as a partner in Tax and Strategic Business Services in the firm’s Houston office.
Weyrich, Cronin & Sorra (WC&S) recently announced that Brianne Baccaro Norris has been selected to participate in Business Volunteer Unlimited's Getting Involved in Volunteer Experiences (GIVE) Class 2011. She is a senior accountant at WC&S who has worked extensively on audit and tax engagements.
