Clifton Gunderson merges with St. Louis-based Humes & Barrington

Clifton Gunderson, a Milwaukee-based certified public accounting and consulting firm, recently announced it has merged with Humes & Barrington LLP – a full-service CPA firm based in St. Louis.

Humes & Barrington will join Clifton Gunderson under the regional leadership of Managing Partner Steve DeBruyn. The merger was effective on June 1.

"We are excited for the many growth opportunities the merger with Humes & Barrington will provide for our firm, our clients, and our future clients," said DeBruyn. "Humes & Barrington is a major player within the St. Louis business community and has earned a solid reputation with its clients for quality and expertise. We are eager to combine these strengths with ours and build for our firm’s future and the future for our clients. This is a great fit for both firms."

For 25 years, Humes & Barrington has served clients in the St. Louis marketplace and has been recognized as one of the best CPA firms in St. Louis. It is a full-service firm with strong tax, assurance, IT, wealth management, and general business consulting practices. The firm’s experts provide service to clients in a number of industries including manufacturing, distribution, non-profit, real estate, contracting, IT consulting, and financial services.

Through this merger, seven Humes & Barrington partners including Brian Humes, Jay Barrington, Marilyn Lunnemann, Greg Schmittgens, Joan Humes, Joe Herman, and Barb DuBois will join Clifton Gunderson. In addition, 53 professionals from Humes & Barrington will join the firm. All professionals of Humes & Barrington will remain at their current office location at 333 S. Kirkwood Road, Suite 300, St. Louis.

"With Clifton Gunderson’s strong presence across the country, this merger will allow us to expand our existing tax, assurance, IT, and business advisory services and support our desire to grow in additional strategic services," said Jay Barrington, managing partner. "We are excited about the tremendous network of resources offered by Clifton Gunderson, which will enhance the opportunities to serve our clients’ needs of tomorrow as well as our team members’ professional development."

Clifton Gunderson also announced Dennis Bailey has been named partner-in-charge of the St. Louis office. Bailey will be responsible for the overall operations and growth of the St. Louis practice. He also will coordinate client services with other Clifton Gunderson offices across the state and firm-wide.

Bailey has more than 40 years of experience in public accounting. He most recently served as an audit partner in the firm’s Peoria, Illinois, office. He specializes in audit and accounting services with an emphasis on manufacturing, construction, wholesale/distribution, and retail industries. He is a CPA and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Illinois CPA Society. Prior to joining Clifton Gunderson, Bailey was a partner with KPMG.

"Dennis has played an integral role in elevating our assurance practice in downstate Illinois and across the firm," said DeBruyn. "We are eager to continue to utilize Dennis’s leadership experience and the client relationships he has developed over the years to further strengthen our assurance practice. His areas of expertise will nicely complement the St. Louis marketplace and the needs of the firm’s current clients in this location."

In addition to Humes & Barrington, Clifton Gunderson announced earlier this week the acquisitions of U.S. Tax Advantage (USTA) and Stockton Bates. USTA is an international tax consulting services firm with locations in New York, Boston, Chicago, Milwaukee, and Houston. The acquisition became effective May 1.

Stockton Bates is a firm of certified public accountants in the Delaware Valley with offices in Philadelphia and Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Haddonfield, New Jersey. The acquisition became effective June 1.

Clifton Gunderson also announced it is adding the talent and resources of the former Merrillville, Indiana, office of BKD. By combining resources and expertise with these four organizations, Clifton Gunderson strengthens its presence as one of the leading suppliers of international tax services with the acquisition of USTA and expands its national footprint in several new markets including St. Louis, Philadelphia, and New York City. In addition, 112 professionals will join Clifton Gunderson as a result of these transactions.
