Alan Deichler named new president of CPAmerica International
by AccountingWEB on
Alan Deichler, a sales and marketing executive with more than 35 years of corporate experience, is the new president of CPAmerica International, one of the world's largest associations of independent CPA firms.
Deichler takes over leadership of the association Jan. 1 from longtime president Douglas H. Thompson, Jr., who is semi-retiring after 27 years with CPAmerica. Thompson, 67, will continue in a consultant's role with the association on a part-time basis.
Deichler comes to CPAmerica from HRsmart in Richardson, Texas, where he served as chief marketing officer and oversaw worldwide sales and marketing initiatives of the talent management software company.
"Alan brings outstanding credentials to the job," Thompson said. "I am confident he will be equally outstanding on the job. Personally, I like his focus and experience, which is basically outside the CPA profession, in sales, marketing and customer service. I believe he will bring new, fresh ideas to CPAmerica and its members."
Thompson built the organization from a small group of 17 firms in 1982 to one of the world's largest accounting associations. Today, CPAmerica's membership has grown to 81 large independent firms, representing 1,500 partners in the United States with billings of $1.3 billion. Subsidiary association CPAConnect has grown to include nearly 250 smaller independent firms, and through the Horwath International Alliance, CPAmerica is connected to more than 700 offices worldwide with revenues surpassing $3 billion.
"I'm not getting out of the race, I'm changing the pace. I'm going to be entering events that I want to enter. It's not going to be the 100-yard dash. It's going to be a long-distance event at a slower pace," Thompson said.
Deichler was selected in September after an extensive nationwide search by CPAmerica's board of directors. During the transition period this fall, he served as vice president and traveled across the country meeting members and attending CPAmerica conferences.
"Alan has great potential to be the right person at the right time for CPAmerica," said Dale Gettelfinger, managing partner of Monroe Shine in New Albany, Ind., and 2010 chair of the CPAmerica Board of Directors. "I believe Alan's temperament is a fine match for the transition at hand. Alan is a good listener who seeks information. This will allow him to get the right information to the right people, which will facilitate the right decisions."
Deichler previously was president of Capital Formation Counselors, Inc., in Tampa, and in an earlier position with MarketSource, a sales support outsourcing firm, he doubled the company's sales during his tenure as executive vice president of sales and marketing.
At Acclivus Corporation, he grew the world partner network 600 percent and revenues 500 percent in three years. He also coached partners in developing a sales culture and directed the business development effort at Ernst & Young for the Southwest region in the mid-1990s.
Previously, Deichler spent 22 years in multiple management positions with IBM.
"I am excited and looking forward to supporting and working with CPAmerica members throughout the country," Deichler said. "The question has often been asked of me why I chose to accept the offer of CPAmerica to come on board. My answer has been because of the people. Every conference, meeting and interaction continues to validate that answer."
Deichler has spent most of the past two decades living in Dallas, Texas, but is no stranger to the North Florida area. After growing up in Rochester, N.Y., he attended Jacksonville University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in management. His first sales territory with IBM was in the Gainesville area, where CPAmerica's executive offices are located.
