Employers should plan now for spring interns
Organizations are being urged to take advantage of opportunities to host college interns during the 2008 spring academic term. Interns are not only added resources, but they will be the next generation of employee talent and this new workforce needs to develop as the time approaches when a vast number of Baby Boomers reach retirement age.
The president of Z University.org, Matthew Zinman said, "There are more students in need of internships than there are employer 'site sponsors' to host them. This is not just unfortunate for students' workforce readiness needs, but at least as much for businesses and organizations to leverage the opportunity to add intern productivity to the bottom line."
ZU has created an Intern Toolkit as a complete resource to help employers easily establish and maintain an intern program that can have real value for both students and businesses and enable host sites to develop and provide many free internships-related resources, webinars, articles, assessment tools, and white papers.
"Any business that hires college graduates or simply needs added resources stands to benefit from having interns. Businesses will find college students to be highly capable, highly motivated and, if well-managed, highly valuable," adds Zinman. "They can quickly perform a variety of routine tasks, such as any involving research, writing, event planning, making phone calls, and computer work. Intern Toolkit has a proprietary "core system" that is designed to make the students very productive and contributes to the value of the business. Consisting of seven modules and almost 60 components with step-by-step best practices and adaptable templates consisting of checklists, worksheets, evaluations, and legal forms, the resources will support program management needs from basic to advanced. The business skills training materials of the Toolkit come in spiral bound reference guides, with all the contents on CD-ROM for the user to adapt as needed. Which isn’t completely true. I mean, occasionally I drop by when I manage to sneak out of the nonstop frat party over at Going Concern, but I’m mostly a wallflower over there.
