Ohio CPAs teach local students 'Smart Money Management' skills

Classroom,Hands

On November 12, fifth-grade students at Brecksville-Broadview Heights Central School in Brecksville, OH will play the stock market and learn the risks and rewards of real-life investing from CPAs with Howard, Wershbale & Co. (HWCO) in Cleveland.

The lesson couldn’t be timelier given the current financial crisis sweeping the country. As families across America are struggling with rising prices and falling investments, children are picking up on potential financial stress at home.

Accounting for Kids Day, presented each November by members of The Ohio Society of CPAs, teaches 10,000 Ohio elementary students how investing over the long term can pay big dividends.

The Brecksville-Broadview Heights Central School students will play a fun, interactive game in which student CEOs and brokers learn how market fluctuations can affect their overall investment. The game supplements classroom curriculum by teaching children how to make smart financial decisions and become savvy consumers and future business leaders.

In a recent survey by Visa, 85 percent of parents say they talk to their children regularly about money management.1 Likewise, parents think it is more important for youth to learn about investing than it was a generation ago.2

“Accounting for Kids Day is fun and a great way for our firm to help kids understand early in life why it’s important to save for the future,” said Scott Filotei, Senior Accountant at HWCO. “Our goal is to help children grow into financially responsible adults who know how to manage their own money.”

Accounting for Kids® Day is presented jointly by The Ohio Society of CPAs and The Ohio CPA Foundation, its charitable Organization. For more information, visit the newsroom at www.ohioscpa.com. Consumers can find more smart money management tips at www.financialfitnessohio.com.
