Margolin, Winer & Evens sponsors competition for Long Island accounting students

Margolin, Winer & Evens LLP (MWE), a CPA firm with offices in Garden City, New York and Manhattan, will sponsor the first annual "College Accounting Challenge," a quiz-show style event for accounting students from four Long Island Colleges - C.W. Post, Hofstra, Adelphi, and SUNY-Old Westbury - on Wednesday, March 25, at the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University in Brookville, New York. Each college will field a team of four seniors, chosen by their professors. The four-round competition will focus on Ethics, Tax, Financial Accounting, and Auditing.

In each round, one student from each team will stand at a podium equipped with a buzzer, and answer 10 questions, says Tracey Segarra, director of marketing at MWE. After the moderator, News 12 Long Island's Senior Correspondent Drew Scott, asks a question, the student who buzzes first answers. The student is permitted to consult with his or her team for 15 seconds before answering. All answers are short answer, true or false or yes or no. If the student gives the correct answer, the team is awarded 100 points; if the answer is incorrect, the next team takes up the challenge. A correct answer to the final question in each round is worth 200 points.

Questions for this exciting event have been prepared by accounting professors from the participating colleges and selected by MWE partners. The content is based on the courses that the students have completed in their regular accounting curriculum. Members of the winning team will be given a new Amazon Kindle2 e-book.

"It's a great way to get our name out and get to know the students and have some fun" says Segarra. "We are looking forward to having a really good time."

"We are particularly excited about holding this event during a period of unprecedented economic uncertainty," says MWE's Managing Partner, Teddy Selinger. "Through this challenge, we hope to place the spotlight on the accounting profession and the importance of following sound accounting and economic principles – the principles we live by and why CPAs are widely held as the most trusted advisors. And, of course, we love a good competition involving bright young people and see this challenge as a healthy, positive venue to showcase some of Long Island's best students."

Margolin, Winer & Evens LLP is a midsized CPA firm with offices in Garden City, Manhattan, and the Cayman Islands. The firm has 27 partners and employs more than 250 professionals.
