- Fast Decision-Making - E-managers must be able to make decision at a rapid pace and sometimes with limited information.
- Partnering - Absolutely essential to the world of e-business, partnering is really what makes e-business work. E-managers must be able to quickly evaluate potential partnering arrangements, negotiate relationships, and build rapport.
- Knowing the Technology - According to one CEO, "In e-business, technology is not a support system, it is the business model."
- Staying Focused - The communication overload that the Internet provides makes it difficult to stay focused on an objective. Successful e-managers have perfected this skill and can teach it to their employees.
- Making Sense of the Future - The future, in the Internet world, is not five or ten years from now. Long-range planning involves determining consumer needs only 18 months in the future. Seek information from all sources: read, network, and surf relentlessly. Don't be afraid to experiment - and learn to recognize when an experiment is a success.
- Being a Talent Magnet - Be able to hire and retain good people by recognizing talent, communicating your vision, providing an environment where motivated employees can perform their jobs without the buildup of bureaucracy, and know how to manage expectations and evolving roles. The comparison is made between an e-manager and a coach of a team of highly-paid free agents.
