Sandra Abalos, Managing Partner of Abalos & Associates, PLLC, has announced that she and tax partner Barry Friefield were delegates at CPAmerica International's 2011 Tax Conference held in Scottsdale, Arizona, on November 2-4. The meeting is an annual event sponsored by CPAmerica International, which brings together partners from member firms across the United States for networking, member sharing, and continuing professional education. The event featured a variety of outside speakers and topics, including advanced S corporation; passive losses; estate and gift taxation; updates on cases, rulings, and procedures from 2011; and member sharing. Abalos & Associates is an exclusive member of CPAmerica. Members share industry-specific knowledge, training programs, practice management techniques, and best practices.
- Sandra Abalos, CPA, has been named the vice chair of the advisory committee of CPA Connect, a professional community of small CPA firms and a companion association to CPAmerica International. She serves on the board of directors of the Institute for Economic Empowerment of Women. Abalos is a former member of the SBA National Advisory Council, IRS Electronic Tax Administration Advisory Council, and a past director of the Phoenix Industrial Development Authority.
- Barry Friefield, CPA, concentrates his efforts on providing clients with business, technology, and tax planning, including the preparation and review of individual and business tax returns. He graduated summa cum laude with a BS in accountancy from the University of Illinois. Friefield is a member of the Arizona Society of Certified Public Accountants (ASCPA) and a former treasurer and board member of the Maricopa County Bar Foundation. A recognized industry expert, Friefield has authored articles that have appeared in Taxation for Accountants and Arizona Business Magazine.
The CPA firm of Abeles and Hoffman, P.C., is pleased to announce Eli Abeles, CPA, has been named a shareholder. Abeles joined Abeles and Hoffman in 2005. In his role as a shareholder, he specializes in providing auditing and consulting services for the firm's clients. Abeles assists an array of clients in the areas of architecture, engineering, law, marketing and advertising, medical, distribution, manufacturing, and construction. Abeles received his MBA in 2001 and his BBA in 2000 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the Missouri Society of Certified Public Accountants (MSCPA), the Enterprise Bank Business Leadership Forum, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Alumni Association. In addition, Abeles is on the board of directors of the Jewish Community Center of St. Louis and is a former board chair of the Camp Sabra Committee. He is also a part of the Audit Committee of the Jewish Federation of St. Louis.
Barry A. Crowe Horwath LLP, has named Brian Sanderson the managing partner of its Healthcare Services group. Sanderson, who is based in Crowe's Oak Brook office, has more than twenty years of healthcare experience with major health systems and professional services firms. In his role, Sanderson is responsible for organizing and developing Crowe's services to respond to client needs within a rapidly changing healthcare environment. Prior to joining Crowe in 2009, Sanderson was a partner in health sciences advisory services with Ernst & Young in Chicago. He has a broad range of experience in healthcare consulting, including revenue improvement, regulatory compliance, and physician services, with specific expertise in revenue cycle, managed care, and physician integration. Sanderson received his BS from the University of Vermont; his MS from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign; and his MBA from Northwestern University's Kellogg Graduate School of Management in Chicago.
Elliott Davis is pleased to announce Patricia (Kay) Biscopink, CPA and Registered Investment Advisor, has been named one of 2011's Women to Watch by the South Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants (SCACPA). Biscopink, a shareholder in the Greenville office of Elliott Davis, was recognized with the award November 17 at the SCACPA's Women in Leadership conference in Columbia, South Carolina. She was one of two honorees in the Experienced Leader category, which recognizes senior level CPAs who have made significant contributions to the accounting profession, their workplaces, and their local communities. With twenty-five years of public accounting experience, Biscopink leads Elliott Davis' International Tax practice, which she launched in 2007. She holds memberships with the AICPA, the SCACPA, and the Oklahoma Society of Certified Public Accountants (OSCPA).
The Knowledge Group/The Knowledge Congress Webcast Series, a leading producer of regulatory-focused Webcasts, has announced that Joseph Manzelli, CPA/CITP, Director of Operations, Fuoco Group LLP, will present The Knowledge Congress' Webcast entitled Tax Document Automation. The Webcast is scheduled for Wednesday, December 14, 2011, from noon-2:00 p.m. ET. Manzelli began his career at a New York City–based CPA firm before joining Fuoco Group, where he leads IT consulting. He holds the AICPA's accreditation of Certified Information Technology Professional (CITP) and has many years of experience in the technology arena. His leadership within these areas has led to speaking engagements at national conferences and seminars.

He brings over forty years of experience in income tax consulting, research, planning, and compliance. He has advised individuals, corporations, family-owned businesses, and partnerships on income, trust, and estate tax matters. Shlafer has served for several years on the Florida State Tax Section of the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants (FICPA) and has testified before Florida legislative committees as to the effects of Florida sales tax on services. He is a past member of the FICPA's Services Tax Task Force, which reviewed proposed Florida tax legislation.
The CPA and consulting firm of Lewis, Hooper & Dick, LLC recently announced that Jacque Smith, paraprofessional, obtained her Advanced QuickBooks ProAdvisor certification. As a paraprofessional, Smith provides bookkeeping, payroll, and accounting services to the firm's clients. She received an associate degree from Garden City Community College and is currently attending Friends University where she is pursuing her bachelor degree in accounting. Her anticipated graduation date is in 2012.
Lewis, Hooper & Dick LLC, is pleased to announce Keysha A. Urie obtained her Kansas license as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Urie serves as a staff accountant at Lewis, Hooper & Dick LLC. Her responsibilities include providing audit and tax return services for clients across a range of industries. Urie is a 2009 graduate of Fort Hays State University where she earned her BBA. She also received her AA in 2005 from Garden City Community College. While in college, Urie was president of the accounting club and prepared income tax returns in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

The accounting and consulting firm of Rice, Sullivan & Co. is pleased to announce Eric Macke has obtained his Illinois Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license. Macke began his accounting career with Rice, Sullivan & Co. in 2009. As a staff accountant, he provides audit and tax services to the firm's clients. In particular, he assists with audits for governmental and not-for-profit entities. Macke graduated magna cum laude from St. Louis University in 2009 with a BBA.

Siddons, who joined Weaver in 1994 when he began his career, has more than seventeen years of experience in public accounting. Siddons serves clients across a variety of industries, including construction, investment funds, real estate, manufacturing and distribution, and agriculture. Siddons earned a BBA from Texas Tech University.
