California CPA society ushers in new era with 'Generation X' chair

Following on the heels of its recent takeover of the top spot as the nation's largest statewide accountancy association, the California Society of CPAs has installed its youngest chair ever, Teresa Mason, 42.

As part of "Generation X" and managing partner of Oakland-based Collins, Mason & Cote, LLP, Mason is driven by the climate of change to advocate for all California CPAs, particularly those who have historically been underserved.

"CalCPA has been searching for ways to better serve CPAs who work in business and industry," said Mason. "In early 2008, CalCPA will launch the Financial Leadership Forum, an innovative, new member group that will tackle the unique challenges facing today's financial and business decision-makers to create tangible solutions that help them achieve success."

In addition to focusing on CPAs in business and industry, CalCPA is increasing its attention on other membership segments that play a central role in shaping the face of the CPA profession in California:
Women, and young, emerging professionals.

"Today, 60 percent of new CPAs are women, which is a trend we have been seeing within the profession for a couple of years," said Loretta Doon, CPA and CalCPA CEO. "This year, in particular, CalCPA leadership reflects this fundamental shift with 10 of our 14 chapter presidents being women, along with our new CalCPA chair and the California CPA Education Foundation president."

Added Mason, "CalCPA has experienced some of its strongest growth among younger CPAs who are eager for guidance and support in areas such as career development, leadership training and networking. Recently, our Young, Emerging Professionals program debuted a standing-room only conference for these 'rising star' CPAs, which further demonstrates that our dedication to this membership segment is a sound strategy."

CalCPA also announced the election of Greg Burke, CPA, of John Waddell & Co. in Sacramento, as first vice chair and Andrea Cope, CPA, of Burr Pilger & Mayer in San Francisco, as secretary/treasurer.
