August Aquila

Since 1994 August Aquila has held leadership roles in the accounting consolidation movement in the United States. August is Vice President-Mergers & Acquisitions for American Express Tax and Business Services Inc. (TBS), a Division of the American Express Company. He is responsible for sourcing, negotiating and closing major acquisitions throughout the country. Prior to this, he held the position of Vice President-Field Management and was responsible for the general management of TBS’ Eastern Region, its development, growth and P&L performance.

With 20 years of marketing and management experience in professional and financial services, August has accumulated a wealth of hands-on experience and knowledge. From 1987 to 1994 he was the Senior Vice President for Consulting and Product Development of the Practice Development Institute (PDI), the premiere management and marketing consulting firm in the accounting profession..

He was also a partner (1985-1994) in the Chicago-based accounting firm of Friedman, Eisenstein, Raemer & Schwartz (FERS), a 30 partner, $26 million firm and the parent company of PDI. In 1985 he was the first marketing director in the United States to achieve an equity position in a CPA firm.

August is an internationally known consultant and speaker in the areas of CPA firm mergers, profit improvement, strategic marketing planning, business development, firm management and partnership issues. He has presented seminars, key note speeches, partner and management retreats in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Mexico for the American Marketing Association, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), Chartered Accountants of England and Wales, Chartered Accountants of Alberta and British Columbia, CA, various State CPA Societies, Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education, Chicago Bar Association, United States Information Agency, Association for Accounting Marketing (AAM) and various local, regional and national CPA and law firms in the United States and Canada.

He has written hundreds of articles for nationally syndicated publications to the accounting, legal and professional services industries. His award winning articles have appeared in Journal of Accountancy, Accounting Today, Partner to Partner Advisory, Professional Marketing (UK), Certified General Accountants Magazine (Canada), CPA Profitability Monthly, CPA Marketing Report, Bisk Audio Practice Management Report, The Management Advisor, New Accountant, Marketing News, The Marcus Report, CPA Personnel Report, Accounting Weekly, and Accounting for Law Firms.

August currently writes regular management, marketing and consulting columns for Pro2Net, The CPA Software News, and is managing editor of Partner to Partner Advisory:The Definitive Resource for CPA Firm Leadership. In 1992, his article entitled "How To Lose Clients Without Really Trying" was selected by the Journal of Accountancy as the best article of the year.

He is the co-author of CPA Firm Mergers That Work, the primary author of CPAs That Sell: A Complete Guide to Promoting Your Services, and the author of Breaking the Paradigm: Alternative Strategies to Pricing Accounting Services. He is a contributing editor to The Marketing Advantage and How To Hire A Marketing Director and Make It Work, both published by the AICPA MAP Committee. He is currently working on a book entitled Will We Ever Do Business in My Lifetime?

A former Fulbright Fellow, August earned a BA and MBA from DePaul University (Chicago) and a Ph.D. from Indiana University (Bloomington). He is listed in the Who's Who in the Midwest. He served on the Marketing faculty of DePaul's College of Commerce for 14 years teaching at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. He is an Executive Member of the American Marketing Association (AMA), a founding Board Member of the Association for Accounting Marketing (AAM), a member of the National Law Firm Marketing Association (NALFMA) and is currently on the Board of Directors of The Minnesota Opera.
