1. Treasury Announces New Tax Shelter Regulations

The Treasury Department has released amended regulations for the disclosure of tax shelters. These rules expand the reporting requirements currently expected of corporations to include individuals, trusts, and subchapter S corporations. "The net is wider," said Pam Olson, Treasury assistant secretary for tax policy.

5. Gambling With The Fair Labor Standards Act: A Multi-Million Dollar Wager

FLSA requires overtime pay for all workers who work in excess of 40 hours per week. Its intent is to keep employers from exploiting the American worker. More than six decades after its enactment, however, employers are violating the FLSA more than ever, usually without even knowing it.

6. IMA Opens Its Free "Ethics Hotline" to Non-Members

Margaret Butler, president of the Institute of Management
Accountants announced that the IMA's confidential ethics
hotline has now been opened to non-members. She said the
hotline is particularly well-suited for small businesses.

7. Europe Mulls U.S.-Style Accounting Oversight Board

Negotiations over the possible exclusion of European auditors from certain provisions of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act ended in compromise. European Union Internal Market Commissioner Frits Bolkestein said Europe might consider forming its own U.S.-style accounting oversight board.

The global consulting firm Hewitt Associates has analyzed recent trends in health care and the news is not good.
