Editorial:

I joined the field of public accounting back in the days of the Big Eight, and I still occasionally find myself referring to those large firms as the Big Eight, instead of the Big Five. One by one, I watched the firms take on new identities and new names. Over the years they have all split, merged, exchanged secret handshakes, and so on. Every single Big Eight firm that was in place when I was a proud member of the club has changed its name - every firm but one. Until this week.

The last holdout, Arthur Andersen, has made the circle complete. No longer will we refer to this venerable giant by its whole name. The only member of the original Big Eight that proudly carried a first and last name in its title now bears one simple name. Welcome to the new millennium, Andersen.
