Editor's Note
=============

We're coming to you this week from Bristol England, where AccountingWEB's editorial management team is meeting with the editors of our sister site www.accountingweb.co.uk, and editors of several other on line communities in our network. Our goal is to continually explore new ideas, and find new ways to use the Internet for your benefit. AccountingWEB continues to benefit from these best practices meetings, and we look forward to implementing many new features on our site in the coming months. As always, we appreciate any feedback from you on what's working and what's not, on what you would like to see more of and what you get value out of. AccountingWEB is YOUR accounting community resource, and we promise to continue our efforts to add value to your experience.

1. AccountingWEB Calls on the Accounting Profession to Join in a Campaign to Help Fight Diabetes
----------------------------------------
Help celebrate AccountingWEB's one-year anniversary as we lead the accounting community in a month-long fund raising campaign to help fight Diabetes, a debilitating disease that affects one in seventeen people. We are asking each of our members to support this campaign either through a direct donation to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), or through referring your colleagues to AccountingWEB, for which we will provide a cash donation to the ADA. The staff of AccountingWEB will culminate our month long campaign by participating in the "Smoothest Bike Ride in The World" around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on July 22. Please join in this important effort and support the fight against Diabetes. For details, go to:

2. Ethics Violations Turn Up in KPMG Survey
----------------------------------------
More than 75% of employees who participated in a nationwide survey cited violations of the law or company standards in their workplace. Nearly half of the survey respondents claim their company would 'lose significant public trust' if the violations were made public. Violations included deceiving or lying to customers, mishandling of confidential information, sexual harassment, discrimination, unsafe working conditions, and environmental breaches. Even in the financial arena, nearly 20% of the survey respondents indicated their awareness of improper handing of financial data.

3. Should US Companies Pay European Taxes? What's Your Opinion?
----------------------------------------
A recent AccountingWEB article highlighted the proposal by the European Union to subject US companies to the Value Added Tax (VAT) that many European companies pay when doing business in Europe. The VAT rate can be as high as 25% for software and data sales, and could cost US companies $2 billion over the next five years. What do you think OF this proposal? PLEASE VOTE in our poll and let us know if you think this proposal makes sense or not.

4. Accounting Firm Press Conferences Go Live on the Internet
----------------------------------------
Online press conferences for your organization: Is this a sign of a future trend? If so, we at AccountingWEB are proud to help bring this new communication channel to the Accounting profession, as we did this week in creating an online press room for Ohio based SS&G Financial Services who announced its merger with Greene & Wallace CPAs to a 'room' full of local, state, and national press. The format included some prepared comments and plenty of time for Q&A from reporters around the country who were invited to participate. Find out about how this worked, and if your organization is interested in following SS and G's lead, contact Kelly McRae at AccountingWEB to inquire about renting our pressroom.

6. New Grads Find Meaningful Employment
----------------------------------------
Many accounting grads, at least California grads, are seeking employment in non-traditional environments. More students are considering taking a socially responsible job because it gives them a feeling of satisfaction, even if it doesn't provide a large paycheck.

Q&A Forum Questions and Answers Posted
Whether you want to test your technical expertise or find an answer to a knotty problem, our Q&A Forum is the place to go. There are some fascinating queries along with answers which deserve to be in textbooks. Here are some of our latest teasers:

"If you temporarily contribute after-tax funds to an IRA (for stock trading purposes) and then withdraw the same amount shortly thereafter, leaving the trade proceeds in the IRA, does the IRS consider this an early distribution?" "How does royalty income from abroad differ in taxation from domestic income (salary) if you have both?" "I would like to know what books are recommended for accounting students to learn more about the dynamics of the career. I would like to read over some books this summer."

Thanks to Henry L. Wilson for his answer to a recent question about the statement of cash flows.

9. What Do HR Directors Want in a Resume?
----------------------------------------
Though only 17 percent of jobseekers send their resumes electronically, twice that many human resources professionals named email their preferred method for receiving resumes, in a newly-released survey. In the Cover Letters and Resumes Survey conducted by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), emailing resumes was favored by 34 percent of respondents, compared to 31 percent favoring postal mail and 25 percent preferring fax (with the rest preferring some Web-based delivery system, hand-delivery, or stating no preference). Other findings include preferences on size (one page), appearance (grammatical errors will eliminate you) and cover letter quality (only 2% stand out from the crowd.)

10. Excel/Word Tip: Use AutoCorrect to Spell Out Abbreviated Name
----------------------------------------
Here's a quick tip for Excel and Word users. You can use the AutoCorrect feature to enable you to enter a quick abbreviation for a lengthy name, and the program will spell out the name for you. For example, let's say your company name is Campbell, Turnbull, Connery, Frankenworth, and Lutz. That's a lot to have to type each time you want to enter the company name. From the Excel or Word menu, choose Tools, AutoCorrect. In the Replace area enter the abbreviation you want to use. In this case, you might want to use CTCFL as your abbreviation, or perhaps you want to make this really easy and use *** for your abbreviation. In the With area, enter the full company name, including commas, just as you would type it if you were to type it out completely. Now click the Add button. From now on, when using Word or Excel, if you enter your abbreviation, followed by a space or a punctuation mark, the full name of your firm will appear.
