NYSSCPA's Barry appointed to AICPA Board of Trustees

Joanne S. Barry, CAE, executive director of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, has been appointed as a member to the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) Foundation Board of Trustees.

As one of seven trustees, Barry will assist in advancing the AICPA Foundation's core purpose, which is to benefit the public by supporting financial education and ethical business behavior and promoting a culturally diverse profession.

"I am excited to be appointed a member of the AICPA Foundation Board of Trustees," Barry said. "The Foundation's core values are closely aligned with those of the New York State Society of CPAs and the CPA profession as a whole. I am especially focused on diversity within the profession as we look to future generations of CPAs. I look forward to participating in the important work of the AICPA Foundation."

Barry became NYSSCPA executive director in May. Her career at the NYSSCPA began in 1981 as assistant director of public relations. She maintained several other management positions prior to her appointment as executive director, including director of public relations, director of the communications division, managing director of communications, deputy executive director, and acting executive director.

In 1987, Barry launched Career Opportunities in the Accounting Profession (COAP), which recruits minority high school students who have historically been underrepresented in the CPA profession. Since COAP's inception, more than 2,500 students have participated in the program. Over 53 percent of them have gone on to study business or accounting, according to NYSSCPA survey statistics.

Barry is a member of the Public Relations Society of America and the International Association of Business Communicators, having served on the executive board of the New York Chapter. She also is a member of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) and its New York Chapter. She has the Certified Association Executive (CAE) credential from the ASAE, the highest professional credential in the association industry.

Barry also serves on the Board of Trustees and on the Executive Committee of Family and Children's Services, a not-for-profit organization based in Elizabeth, NJ, whose mission is to strengthen families and to build futures for disadvantaged community members. She chairs its Communications and Advocacy Committee and heads a task force on governance issues.

Barry received her BA in English with a journalism concentration from Montclair State University and an MS in Management and Urban Policy with a concentration in non-profit management at The New School in New York City.
