A survey conducted of men and women who work in the Small and Medium Sized Business (SMB) segments revealed that working habits differ between the sexes.
The survey of 314 men and women was conducted in the last quarter of 2006 by Broadwick Corporation. The company used their web-based service, IntelliContact, a leading email marketing software for the SMB market.
A series of questions concerning working habits was asked of the respondents, including how they handled their email; when they read it; if they have a home office; and how they measure success.
When asked "How do you measure success?", men and woman held different definitions. The most frequent response from women, at 39 percent, was having the ability of 'Being in Charge of My Own Time'. For 37 percent of the men, the number one answer of the measure of success was 'Financial Security'.
Men and women handle email differently. Women are more apt to scan it and read the entire email later (55 percent), while most of the men in the survey (54 percent) read their emails as soon as they are received.
The response of each group was similar, however, when they were asked about checking for email. Both sexes replied that they check email as soon as it arrives-54 percent of men and 49 percent of women. Of the group, 13 percent of men and 15 percent of women check email only every 30 minutes.
A vast majority of the men - 76 percent - and women - 84 percent - said they have a home office, confirming a trend that seems indicative of the whole SMB market.
