Just when you thought you were turning the corner on Y2K compliance, some practical joker has initiated an email hoax that may make it to your staff before it gets to your IT department.
The joke centers around Y2K compliance of Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows NT.
The email starts out something like this: “Every copy of Windows will fail on January 1st unless you fix it now, to fix it…” The email then walks the reader through what looks like a fix. The instructions are easy enough for a third grader to make changes to a computer’s control panel.
Save yourself (and your staff) some time. Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows NT are already Y2K compliant, as long as you taken all the recommended actions in Microsoft’s compliance documents.
