A bid is underway to allow professionals a faster path to their marketplace on the Internet by creating a new top level domain of ".pro" for accredited accounting professionals.
This would mean that every CPA may be able to register his or her professional domain name -- such as www.JohnnyBGood.cpa.pro -- allowing consumers the ability to identify registrants as credentialed professionals in an increasingly difficult-to-distinguish .com world.
Additionally, .pro would be available to professional companies and associations, which can register on .pro and leverage the new extensions to enhance their member services.
Similarly, other professional designations such as law (www.JohnnyBGood.law.pro) and medical doctors (www.JohnnyBGood.med.pro) would be able to take advantage of a similar opportunity to distinguish themselves as professional among the crowded marketplace.
The .pro domain name, if approved, would be administered by a joint venture between New York based Register.com and London based Virtual Internet, plc. The new venture will be called Registrypro.com and would require proof of credentials for anyone wishing to utilize the names.
"More and more Internet users are growing frustrated with their inability to find what they want online quickly and easily," said Richard Forman, President and CEO of register.com. "By creating .pro, RegistryPro can potentially revolutionize the domain name system, allowing for global adaptability and scalability, while fulfilling a genuine need among web users. The end-result is a way for professionals to identify themselves on the Internet while fostering consumer confidence not previously possible with .com, .net and .org."
