Many CPAs and accounting professionals rely on the Internet to transfer client files and sensitive information, but sometimes high security just doesn't work.
Such was the case as MSNBC was able to hack through files, using a common database tool, to view the records of seven e-commerce Web sites, including personal information about cardholders. In a nutshell, the information was not password-protected.
Experts speculate that the problems stem from the sites not protecting or encrypting the database files with passwords, and that the problem may be more widespread than meets the eye.
Defenders of the sites, and small businesses in general, disagree, saying that the problem is that smaller ventures are more vulnerable to attack than the larger ones.
The solution? Ask about the security precautions in place in any ecommerce website that you frequent. If you don't get an answer that you're comfortable with, move on.
