Perhaps they've seen one too many of those simple and direct "I'm a PC, I'm a Mac" advertisements, but a high level Microsoft exec said the company has awoken from its slumber and will be fighting back.
"You thought the sleeping giant was still sleeping. Well, we've woken up and it's time to take our message forward," Corporate Vice President of Windows Consumer Products Brad Brooks said in a keynote speech at Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference in Houston, according to numerous media reports.
In an attempt to dispel some of the myths surrounding Windows Vista, Brooks said Microsoft is prepared to strike back against "noisy competitors" with a multi-million dollar advertising campaign.
"Windows Vista is a good product. We need to make our voices heard," he said.
Specifically, Brooks said Vista's security track record in its first year since its launch has been cleaner than any other open source or commercial operating system in history, Channelweb.com reported. The system also experienced 20 percent fewer security problems than XP last year, he said.
Brooks admitted mistakes had been made with the launch of Windows Vista, PCPro reported. "We broke a lot of things," Brooks said. "We know that, and we know it caused you a lot of pain."
Apple and others have spent the past year and a half criticizing Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system, according to The Wall Street Journal, which wrote about Vista's image problem last winter.
"At the time, Microsoft told us that it had no plans for a counteroffensive or even to defend itself against the charges," The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday. "Instead of acknowledging the attack ads, Microsoft hoped to change minds by continuing to talk up Vista's benefits. That didn't work. Vista's image is as bad as ever."
Microsoft is keeping mum about details of the marketing campaign but says the ads will be more aggressive than those to date.
