In the midst of waiting to see who wins the presidential election, the most popular news sites on the Web reported a very busy day on Tuesday, as well as an expected significant increase in Web site hits since the last election in 1996.
For example, MSNBC reported its largest day in history. The day peaked around 12-1 p.m. EST with as many as 4 to 4.5 million single page hits, and the site finished up the day with more than 5 million hits.
This is more than a 300 percent increase compared to 1996, when there were about 1.8 million hits.
MSNBC also reported slow page loads due to the heavy traffic, but the site did not crash like it did in 1996 due to the traffic. Other sites, too, faced similar situations; Democratic.org reported some pages took more than one minute to load.
