Anyone who has purchased computer books knows that building a library of necessary resources can be quite an expensive venture. What is especially frustrating is to purchase a book when you only need the information that appears in one or two chapters.
Microsoft Press has a solution to these problems. You can choose from a list of 36 titles in the Microsoft Press library and select the chapters you want, then purchase those chapters for downloading on your computer or have them printed and bound into one custom book.
The fee for this service is comparable to the price of a single computer book, yet you only need to purchase the information you need. At Microsoft Press Custom Books, you can choose from books in the following categories:
- Windows 2000
- SQL Server 2000
- Exchange 2000
- Office 2000
One especially nice feature of this program is that you can view the actual chapters online before you make your purchasing decision, then add one chapter at a time to your shopping cart. Feel free to mix chapters from different books.
When you have made your selection, you can request that the chapters be downloaded, or request a bound book that will be delivered to you. Bound books are printed and shipped within four business days. Electronic books are available for download within four hours.
The cost of each custom book is calculated on a per chapter basis, no matter how many pages are in each chapter. For electronic books, the price is $6.40 for the first chapter and $4.80 for each additional chapter ordered at the same time. The printed book is $8 for the first chapter and $6 for each chapter thereafter, keeping in mind that printed books are not available until your total page count exceeds 107 pages. Shipping cost is extra.
You select the order in which the chapters appear in your book. This program is a limited-time trial program, available only to residents of United States and Canada. The length of the trial period has not been disclosed on the Microsoft Press Web site. If the program is successful, it is possible that the program will continue and more titles will be added.
